Community Service Initiative

Introduction

As an architecture student, I believe that architects have a massive responsibility towards the public, as it is inherent in the nature of the industry to create spaces that improve the livelihood of people. Architecture is never about one person and his/her buildings. It has always been about the users and the surrounding community.

To echo the above belief, we as architecture students should open our eyes to the outside world beyond the four walls of the studio and start giving back, one small step at a time. Community Service Initiative is a mandatory elective for architecture students that provides the opportunity to aid and improve the livelihood of a chosen community.

Our group has been contribute with Ar Huat Lim to to solve the community needs Low cost Apartment Sri Tioman 1, The project also involve with PPR (Project Perumahan Rakyat). There are a few group of student doing research and interview with the local community to know more about their needs.

Issue of Sri Tioman 1 Apartment

Sri Tioman consist of two block which is Sri Tioman 1 and Sri Tioman 2. This is a low cost apartment which consist of mix culture and races. Most of the population is Malay community, and retired worker. Before the project start, the local community does not care much about the environment issue around the apartment. All the rubbish been trow nearby the staircase, some of them just trow down from their unit. This is because then location of the main rubbish bin is too far from their respective unit. Kid s does not know much about the environment health issue.

Proposal Solution

Due to the rubbish been trow every where. Our proposal is to proposed recycle bin to improve the cleanliness of the site and educate the local community the way of recycling waste material by using poster and graphical image.

Reflection and Experience

Honestly, I'm thanks full that we finally successful complete this project however in this project we are lack of resource and times. We made a lot of interview and interaction with the local community to know more about their needs. In finding the material wise, we try hard to find the can and bottle everywhere we can, does't care about dirtiness.

After the material collection, the new problem faced again, which is the construction problem. The connection of the bin does't not suit it. We had to wasting out time to re-figure the design of the connection.

Other that, there is still cause other technical issue, such as the rubbish bin framing delayed to deliver to us.

Finally, we had complete this project on the stated date. In this project, i learn how to communicate and interact more closely with people., understand more about other people needs, and solve the problem occurs.
